Lieutenant Colonel Gary Levenson, '80, Deputy Commandant
Lieutenant Colonel Gary Levenson graduated from the Virginia Military Institute with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. A member of the class of 1980, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers.
After completion of the Engineer Officers Basic Course, Lieutenant Colonel Levenson was assigned to the Tactics Committee, 80th Division (Tng), USAR. From November 1985 to November 1986, he served as Aide de Camp to the Deputy Commanding General, 80th Division, BG Richard E. Collier, VMI ’57.
He continued to serve as Aide to BG Collier upon his promotion to Major General and assuming command of the 310th TAACOM, USAR. In May of 1988, Lieutenant Colonel Levenson was assigned to the 229th Engineer Battalion, 29th ID (L) and served in that unit as the Assistant Operations Officer, Company Commander, Assistant Division Engineer, Battalion Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer. Accepting an AGR tour of active duty in October 1996, he reported to VMI Army ROTC, where he served as the detachment Executive Officer and MS I instructor until July 2000. He was selected as the Deputy Commandant of Cadets and assumed those duties in August 2000. Lieutenant Colonel Levenson is a graduate of the Engineer Officers Basic and Advanced Courses, US Army Airborne School, Sapper Leader Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School and Command and General Staff College.
His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Parachutist Badge.
