As a valued donor to VMI, you have control over the direction of your gift. Most gifts received in support of VMI every year are restricted for a specific program, project, department, etc.. A donor restricts his or her gift by indicating on a check or a reply card or in other correspondence a specific purpose for his or her gift. The gift’s designation is confirmed on receipts. Annual gifts that are restricted are deposited into one of many accounts, and distributed annually.
Restricted endowments constitute a permanent gift that, over time, will provide increasing support for VMI. VMI Foundation gift officers work with donors to ensure that restricted endowments are directed where donors wish and have the maximum impact possible on the Institute.
Unrestricted funds are extremely vital to VMI’s current and future success. Donors provide these gifts through the Foundation Fund, which specifically raises unrestricted funds for VMI’s academic and co-curricular programs, or establish an endowment meant to generate unrestricted funds. The VMI Foundation deeply appreciates all donors—no matter the size of their gift—who place their confidence in VMI and the VMI Foundation and give in a way that significantly helps VMI’s cadets, faculty, and staff.
The VMI Foundation invests endowed gifts, unrestricted and restricted, for one full fiscal year before disbursing any funds. This means that only income from investments is used for the donor’s wishes. The principal is never spent and provides a continual source of financial support for VMI. Annually, the VMI Foundation sends donors a statement showing the status of their funds and, if applicable, who is receiving support.
