Benjamin Franklin once observed that one of the best friends anyone can have is “ready money”.
The same holds true for VMI. Therefore, the Institute’s leaders always make unrestricted money a top priority for fundraising. Unrestricted money gives VMI the ability to meet challenges, take advantage of opportunities to improve the VMI education, and reinforce successes in the academic and co-curricular programs.
While many classes have established endowments that generate unrestricted money for VMI, the bulk of unrestricted money comes from the annual donations made to the Foundation Fund by alumni and friends. Many of these gifts are relatively small, but the net effect is most impressive. In past fiscal year, the Foundation raised more than $2.5 million, and that amount is equivalent to the income from an endowment of more than $50 million. That’s power.
