Jackson Symposium Features Battlefield Tour
Col. Keith GibsonLEXINGTON, Va., Jan. 16, 2012 – Registration is now open for the 2012 Stonewall Jackson Symposium, a biennial event which this year will recognize the 150th anniversary of Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign. In a format slightly different from those of previous years, the symposium, sponsored by the Stonewall Jackson House and the Virginia Military Institute Museum in Lexington, Va., is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24.
On Friday, the museums have planned a series of lectures and walking tours related to Lexington’s Civil War, concluding with the VMI parade at 4:30 p.m. The Friday daytime events are open to the public free of charge. For this day alone no registration is necessary.
The Saturday event, Stonewall Jackson Symposium Tour of Jackson’s 1862 Battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic, requires pre-registration and is limited to the first 100 registrants. Jackson scholars Robert K. Krick and Col. Keith E. Gibson, VMI museum operations executive director, will be guides for a day-long exploration of these two important battles. Krick will provide the introductory lecture on Friday evening.
To register, visit www.stonewalljackson.org. For more information, call 540-463-2552 or send e-mail to Michael Anne Lynn, Stonewall Jackson House site director, at lynnma@vmi.edu.
The symposium follows the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission’s 2012 signature conference, “Leadership and Generalship in the Civil War,” to be held Thursday, March 22, at VMI’s Center for Leadership and Ethics. Lt. Gen. John W. Knapp ’54, VMI superintendent emeritus and Gottwald Visiting Professor in Leadership and Ethics at VMI, is chair of the conference.
