LEXINGTON, Va., Sept. 21, 2011 – VMI’s men’s club rugby team was recently selected by the Referees Society of Virginia and the Virginia Rugby Union to receive their annual Sportsmanship Award.
The award honors the college club that best interacted with the referees and thus contributed to the overall quality of rugby in Virginia. The award is intended to encourage improvement in all facets of the game of rugby, said VMI rugby coach Wayne Howe.
“VMI rugby epitomizes everything that is good about the school – fierce competition but conducted in a respectful, dignified manner,” said Howe. “I believe this award bears that out.”
To determine which college rugby club receives the Sportsmanship Award, the referees use a rating system that awards points in eight categories for each league match. The final rating is based on the club’s average score over a calendar year, with final judgment and selection by the Referees Society of Virginia.
In addition to VMI, the colleges comprising the Virginia Rugby Union are James Madison University, University of Mary Washington, Old Dominion University, Radford University, University of Richmond, Longwood University, Christopher Newport University, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Roanoke College, Virginia Commonwealth University, Washington and Lee University, and the College of William and Mary.
