VMI Deer Management Program Scheduled
LEXINGTON, Va., Sept. 15, 2011 – Virginia Military Institute will begin a program on Sept. 19 to reduce the size of the deer herd on the post. The program will take place in the North Post area and will continue until Jan. 1.
The deer management plan was coordinated with the Lexington City and is being conducted in accordance with regulations of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries under its Damage Control Assistance Program.
Due to the confined area for the hunt and the city code of Lexington, only VMI employees have been authorized to participate in the hunt.
Hunting will not occur on Sundays; however, hunting could take place other days of the week. Because of the static positions of hunters during the program, hikers on Woods Creek Trail will be unaffected. Signage at either end of the trail will indicate when a hunt is in progress. Hikers are asked to remain on the trail and to prevent any dogs from leaving the trail.
Interfering with an authorized hunt is a violation of the state code; allowing dogs to run loose is a violation of city code.
